Why Power Grids Need Sterlumiq's CAMOS

The rapid growth of data centres, renewable energy, industrial electrification, and underground transmission networks is placing unprecedented demands on power grids. Utilities must transfer more power through existing infrastructure while maintaining reliability amid ageing assets, dynamic power flows, and increasing network complexity.

These conditions increase thermal, mechanical, and operational stress across cable systems — allowing hotspots, joint defects, abnormal operating conditions, and third-party intrusion to go undetected until they affect network performance.

Sterlumiq's Cable Advanced Management Optical System (CAMOS) addresses this by integrating Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technologies, powered by AP Sensing with Sterlumiq's electrical current sensing and advanced analytics into one intelligent monitoring platform, giving operators continuous visibility into cable health, asset performance, and emerging operational risk.

This platform is the result of a strategic technology partnership between Sterlumiq and AP Sensing, a global leader in distributed fiber-optic sensing, announced in June 2026. The partnership brings together AP Sensing's expertise in distributed sensing with Sterlumiq's CAMOS and electrical current sensing capabilities to deliver a unified monitoring environment for utilities, transmission system operators, and network owners worldwide.

CAMOS integrates Sterlumiq's DTS technology, powered by AP Sensing, which uses optical fibre installed along the power cable route to continuously measure temperature across the monitored asset rather than relying solely on discrete sensors at fixed points. The result is a continuous thermal profile that helps operators identify hotspots associated with overloads, installation conditions, deteriorating joints, or abnormal cable behaviour.

Within CAMOS, this thermal intelligence directly supports Real-Time Thermal Rating (RTTR) and Dynamic Cable Rating, helping utilities assess conductor temperature, available ampacity, and network capacity based on actual and not assumed operating conditions.

about DAS

Distributed Acoustic Sensing

CAMOS integrates Sterlumiq's DAS technology, powered by AP Sensing, which uses optical fibre installed along the cable route to detect vibrations and acoustic activity near critical infrastructure. It identifies and locates activity such as excavation, drilling, and heavy machinery movement — enabling operators to investigate potential third-party threats before cable damage occurs.

Submarine Power Cable Monitoring with CAMOS

For submarine power cable systems, CAMOS extends to continuous monitoring of cable partial discharge and vibration with specific passive sensors, combined with DTS Depth of burial engine powered by AP Sensing and burial status along the route.

Depth-of-Burial Status (DoBS) and quantitative Depth-of-Burial Status (qDoBS) help operators identify whether cable sections remain securely buried, have reduced coverage, or have become exposed — enabling earlier intervention, supporting predictive maintenance, and reducing risk associated with shifting seabed conditions, anchor activity, and other external threats.

Depth-of-Burial Status (DoBS) and qDoBS Monitoring

  • Identification of buried, insufficiently covered, and exposed cable sections

  • Quantitative burial-depth insight, where configured

  • Continuous monitoring of changes in burial condition

  • Support for preventive maintenance and route-risk assessment

  • Improved visibility across critical submarine cable assets
